There are several dozen varieties of camphor trees worldwide. The Chinese use them mainly in gardens and parks and they are also the most widely-used ornamental tree for streets in mainland China.
Antrodia is a type of camphor tree unique to Taiwan. It is strong and sturdy and grows at an altitude of between 450 m and 2000 m. The bark of the antrodia tree has a strong fragrance and is ideal for making carved statues and furniture. Many statues in private collections are made from centuries-old antrodia trees. Antrodia trees are used in the production of antrodia cinnamomea, a biotech product.
Taiwan used to have a large volume of antrodia in its forests. Due to its good quality and high economic value, widespread cutting and illegal logging of the antrodia trees has made it extremely rare. It is now listed as one of Taiwan’s protected plants that are on the verge of extinction.
After years of research in Taiwan, antrodia cinnamomea, which is cultivated from the antrodia tree, has been proven in medical journals to be effective in improving the immune system and treating liver ailments and a variety of cancers. Antrodia cinnamomea has now been included as one of the six major biotechnology projects in Taiwan.
